CE#476: Your Feelings? Surprisingly, They’re Based on Math (Inc.)

Emotional Equations has a simple overall theme: Mathematical equations can provide insights into our feelings and emotions. Think it’s impossible to rationalize something intangible like an emotion with a simple equation? You’re wrong. Here’s an example.

According to Chip, suffering is, relatively speaking, a constant since we all suffer to some degree. Meaning, on the other hand, is a variable since we can add or remove a sense of meaning to just about anything. So: Despair = Suffering – Meaning.

When you increase the sense of meaning, your suffering may not change, but your sense of despair lessens.

For example, say you’re trying to get in better shape so you start running five miles a day. It’s really hard. In fact, it’s often painful. You often wonder if all that pain is worth it. The problem is, it’s hard to find meaning in a nebulous goal like “get in better shape.”

CE#475: 10 words of hope to help you get back in the game

Here are 10 words of hope to help you get back in the game:

Recharge – Recharge your drained batteries. Read a good book, hang out with someone positive, or attend a conference.

Rest – Struggles drain us personally. Sometimes we can’t continue until we have an extended period of downtime.

Reward – Reward yourself for small achievements. You may just need one win to spur you to greater things.

Re-energize – As strange as it sounds, I find exercising to be helpful when I need more energy.

Resist – Push through the pain and resist the temptation to quit.

Renew – Renew your passion for the vision you once believed in.

Restart – Invite some change, begin something new or try a different approach.

Reclaim – You had a dream. You believed in it. It had potential. Perhaps you simply need to reclaim what you already had.

Rejoice – Sometimes you need to throw a party…even before you realize the victory. A celebration may give you the motivation to try again.

Remind – People follow the leader. Remind them of their role in achieving the dream. Lead through the drought on to new victories.

CE#470: Job Seekers, Be Creative and Flexible (WSJ)

By RUTH MANTELL

In 2012, creativity and adaptability will be key to landing and keeping a job for many workers, as staff levels remain lean and employees are expected to respond to a wide variety of demands, experts say.

Economists don’t expect loads of job growth, but there could be opportunities in areas such as health care, professional services, retail and some manufacturing, says Harry Holzer, a public-policy professor at Georgetown University. Also, continuing churn in the labor market means that even in areas with few new jobs, there will still be openings when workers move around.

Technical knowledge and experience will be required for certain spots. “For professional services you usually need a professional degree. In health you usually need some training,” Mr. Holzer says. “Manufacturing needs some occupational training. Retail is different. It doesn’t require specific occupational training, but it does often require some interpersonal skills.”
